Water Absorption

It can often be necessary to conduct a water absorption test on certain asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) to determine their exact nature. Harder and less absorbent ACMs are less likely to release fibres when disturbed and, as a result, may be removed using fewer control measures.

The Control of Asbestos Regulations (CAR 2012) state that asbestos cement is defined as a material which, when in a dry state, absorbs less than 30% water by weight.

East Riding Laboratories can offer an asbestos water absorption testing service to differentiate between asbestos insulating board and asbestos cement. This information can then be used to inform your decision regarding suitable control measures. Water absorption testing is not a UKAS accredited test.
