Asbestos Testing
Asbestos is the name used to describe a group of naturally occurring fibrous minerals which were used as insulation and fire-retardant materials in construction for many years. During the early 20th century, asbestos was universally regarded as a harmless substance. However, in the 1930s it became apparent that asbestos fibres can pose a serious health hazard. Large amounts of asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) were used for a wide range of construction purposes until 1999 when all use of asbestos was banned.
This extensive use means that there are still many buildings in the UK which contain asbestos. Where ACMs are disturbed or damaged, asbestos fibres are released into the air which, if breathed in, can lead to serious health risks, including lung cancer, mesothelioma, and asbestosis. Therefore, it is crucial to test for the presence of asbestos before any renovation, demolition, or maintenance activities to prevent exposure.
At East Riding Laboratories, we understand the importance of accurate and reliable testing to identify asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) and ensure the safety of your environment. Whether you’re a homeowner, property manager, contractor, or business owner, our comprehensive UKAS-accredited testing service are designed to provide you with peace of mind and compliance with regulations.
Asbestos analysis is carried out in a well-equipped laboratory, to a UKAS-accredited in-house Test Method based on ISO17025:2017, initially using low power optical microscopy to aid identification of asbestos fibres which are then examined under Polarised Light Microscopy (PLM) to identify the types of asbestos present. A test report is then issued to confirm test results. Flexible turnaround times can be discussed to meet your requirements. Post-analytical guidance on the next steps based on regulatory requirements and best practices can be given. Whether it’s managing asbestos in place or arranging for safe removal, we’re here to assist you every step of the way.
Other services include:
- Asbestos water absorption testing to differentiate between asbestos insulating board and asbestos cement (not a UKAS accredited test).
