Asbestos Testing

Asbestos is the name used to describe a group of naturally-occurring fibrous minerals which were used as insulation and fire retardant materials in construction for many years. During the early 20th century, asbestos was universally regarded as a harmless substance. However, in the 1930s it became apparent that asbestos fibres can pose a serious health hazard. Large amounts of asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) were used for a wide range of construction purposes until 1999 when all use of asbestos was banned. This extensive use means that there are still many buildings in the UK which contain asbestos. Where ACMs are disturbed or damaged, asbestos fibres are released into the air which, if breathed in, can cause serious lung disorders, including cancers.

At East Riding Laboratories, asbestos analysis is carried out in a well-equipped, modern environment, initially using low power optical microscopy to aid identification of asbestos fibres which are then examined under Polarised Light Microscopy (PLM) to identify the types of asbestos present. Rigorous quality assurance procedures ensure that all test results carry a high degree of accuracy. A test report is then issued to the customer to confirm test results.

Normal sample turnaround is 24 – 48 hours, although our premium service ensures same day result reporting. Sample collection can be arranged on request.

Other services include:

  • Asbestos water absorption testing to differentiate between asbestos insulating board and asbestos cement (not an accredited test).
